The Power of Your Subconscious Mind by Dr. Joseph Murphy is a classic in the field of programming your subconscious mind. It was published in 1962 and it has been a bestseller for a long time.

1) Understanding the Conscious vs. the Subconscious Mind

Our mind is like a garden

flower garden

  • Conscious mind – the gardener planting the seeds of thought
    • Our conscious thoughts are constantly molding and changing this garden.
    • Our job as owners of this garden:
      • constantly pull out the weeds
      • sow the right seeds that we want to grow in our garden
  • Subconscious mind – the bed of rich soil
    • The subconscious is where the growth happens, depending on the seeds that have been sown.
    • Whatever you seeds you plant, that’s the kind of fruit you will get.
      • If you plant seeds of wealth, abundance, love, and happiness, those are the fruits you get in life.
  • Thoughts – the seeds themselves

Conscious mind vs. subconscious mind

CONSCIOUS MIND

SUBCONSCIOUS MIND

Master and commander Takes orders from the conscious mind
Gardener The garden
Does the choosing Non-selective (a penny and a million dollars are the same)
Impresses the right things Accepts what we impress upon it
Reasons Does not reason (accepts everything no matter how false something might be)
Powerful Orders of magnitude more powerful than the conscious
Responds to logic Responds to feelings; does not respond to force
Greatest power: reasoning and logic Greatest power: bringing to life whatever we impress upon it

Whatever our conscious mind keeps telling the subconscious mind, that is what our reality will become.

Our most important job

Our most important job is to get the subconscious to accept the idea of whatever it is we want to accomplish.

The subconscious will not just listen to us if we just tell it once or twice or thrice. It is only programmed over a lot of time with intensity of effort and intensity of emotion.

The powerful thing about the subconscious is that once it accepts an idea, it will just begin to execute on it.

Building the blueprint of your life

You are constantly building the blueprint of your life.

This blueprint is your mental home and it is made of the following:

  • your thoughts
  • desires
  • imaginations

These components are constantly working inside of you to construct that blueprint.

Your blueprint is what your subconscious is going to bring about.

EXERCISE: Create a blueprint

  1. Create a vision of what you want your life to become.
  2. Figure out a way to communicate that blueprint to your mind.

This is a simple but profound exercise. What you will find is that on a daily basis, you are distracting yourself a whole lot from your blueprint. You get focused on the problems and the negativity that surround you. See how often you are distracting yourself from thinking about this blueprint.

2) Keys to Communicating with the Subconscious Mind

You have to communicate with the subconscious mind in a certain way in order to harness its power.

2 fundamentals in programming our subconscious mind:

1. Imagination

Between our imagination and our desires or other thoughts, it’s imagination that always wins. Therefore, we have to be able to program our imagination.

We all know that if we focus on obstacles, it’s hard for us to get the outcome we want. Therefore, align your imagination with the outcome that you want.

An easy way to do that: enter a drowsy, sleepy state of mind (just as you’re falling asleep and even as you’re waking up)

  • allows you to communicate directly with your subconscious mind
  • quiets the conscious mind
  • this is when the subconscious is the most susceptible and becomes active
  • the point when you want to imagine the fulfillment of your desire

Imagination is the key to programming. It is our most powerful faculty.

Most people, however, are running around imagining the wrong things:

  • the wrong outcomes
  • the problems that they’re going to face
  • how life has not worked, and so on

Hence, it may not work out in the next few years either.

Therefore, we have to be very careful with what we’re imagining. This is because the subconscious responds powerfully to imagination.

Act as if your imagination comes to life, as if the outcome that you want is already here right now.

When you do that, the subconscious programs yourself as if the outcome has already been accomplished.

Act as if you’ve already won right now.

Feel it right now

When you feel the thrill of accomplishment of your dream or desire, the subconscious will make those feelings real for you. So act and feel like the successful person that you want to become, and that’s when you get that success.

2. Discipline

The subconscious is always manifesting.

Our habitual thoughts are constantly creating our results, so we have to constantly discipline our thoughts and the direction of our imagination. What we imagine happens.

We have to keep the conscious mind busy with the very best outcome that we can think of, because if we are only dwelling on obstacles, problems, delays, setbacks, defeats and past challenges, the subconscious will attract more and more of them.

When your attention wanders, the key is to discipline your mind so that you bring it back to imagining the goal as if it has already been accomplished.

Make a habit therefore to focus on what you desire, and this will help you get to that goal. This will help you program your subconscious.

EXERCISE: Understand where you are today with how you have been programming your subconscious mind over the years. Write down your answer to the following question:

When it comes to your most important goal or desire, what are your dominant thoughts?

Be guided by these follow-up questions:

  • What are you thinking about most of the time?
  • What are you imagining most of the nights?
  • Are you imagining the best possible results or are you not at all imagining anything about them and then hoping somehow it will all work out?
  • Are you thinking that it didn’t work out exactly as you desired?
  • Are you thinking that it has been challenging and will continue to be challenging?

You might have been negatively programming yourself and it is time to change that.

3) Programming Your Subconscious Mind

Exercises to program yourself for success:

“Mental Movie”

Create a mental movie in your mind of the successful outcome of the goal accomplished. Put it on over and over again just before going to sleep.

Michael Phelps’ coach, Bob Bowman, used to make him do this every time he would go in for a race. The videotape was all about him watching himself win that race. He would visualize it in the morning upon waking up and then at night before going to bed.

“Sleep Time”

Go to bed in a deeply satisfied state, knowing that the goal you want is already accomplished. Imagine your loved one congratulating you on your accomplishment.

This is a powerful way to program your mind because over time your it will get used to the idea of you having accomplished that goal.

Our conscious mind slows down just when we’re about to go to sleep and just upon waking up. This is the time when your subconscious is the most suggestible, when you can program it the easiest.

“Feel it in the Finished State”

Write out the perfect outcome you want, and as you go through the day, feel it in a finished state, not as if the outcome is yet to happen at a future time.

If you want to be a millionaire 2 years from now, feel like you already have $1 million in the bank today. How would you feel? That is the feeling you want to carry with yourself.

Don’t force it, don’t try to use your willpower. Just use your imagination. Act as though you are already who you want to be and you will become that person. Then feel the outcome.

“Brief Phrase”

  1. Condense the ultimate outcome that you want into a brief phase.
  2. Get into a sleepy, drowsy state through the night or in the morning.
  3. Repeat the brief phrase over and over again, as though a lullaby.

Examples of brief phrases (if you want to become a millionaire in the next two years):

  • “I am a millionaire.”
  • “I am wealthy.”
  • “Wealth.”

Those brief phrases will evoke the feelings of success in you and cause you to program your mind for success

“Affirmations”

Repeat your affirmations until you get the results you desire.

To affirm is to state that this is the way it is. This is so regardless of all the evidence to the contrary. If you’re not able to believe in it and if you can’t feel it, it’s not gonna happen.

Repeating affirmations leads to a state of consciousness where the subconscious will accept the affirmations that you have as true.

Example:

“I am a hardworking, ambitious entrepreneur and I run a million-dollar business.”

What you have seen in these exercises are the keys to communicating with the subconscious mind using the idea of imagination (Mental Movie, Imagination in Sleep Time, Feeling it in a Finished State) and of discipline (Brief Phrase and Affirmations) repetitively.

When we have the freedom and discipline to think, we can direct our mind to add to the outcome.

How to receive guidance from the subconscious

EXERCISE: This is something I have personally used multiple times now, from simple to profound requests, and I have received amazing results from it. It is a very powerful tool.

  1. Quiet your mind and still your body. Relax completely.
  2. Put your focus on solving the problem consciously.
  3. Start feeling happy as if the problem is already solved.
  4. Let your mind play with the happiness and the satisfaction as you put yourself to sleep and as you wake up in the morning.
  5. You might get the answer or you may not get it after the first night, but if you keep on repeating this, the answer will come.

You can actually give your subconscious various tasks. (For example, sometimes I go to bed telling my subconscious to wake me up at 6 in the morning, and 95% of the time that actually happens.)
